It would not be entirely surprising if a large percentage of small to medium sized businesses were somewhat unable to articulate the concept of business intelligence and how it affects their firm. This does not mean necessarily mean incompetence or willful negligence. It might very well be that these businesses are in fact using business intelligence but have either not identified it or could have identified it under a different name.

The purpose of this article is to give a brief overview of the role that business intelligence can play in the effective administration of an entrepreneurial adventure. In the briefest manner possible, I will attempt to explore some of the broader themes that run through this concept.

Many business people will know their bottom line. Occasionally this is just a case of instinct and talents. Alternative the director may have to attend a course or undertake significant management training to acquire these skills. A good manager will understand exactly how and when to maximize their business profits. Some might even have a very sophisticated outlook on things such as human resource management, contracting and cost based pricing. However the total sum of all the information that a business needs to functional decisions is called business intelligence.

Unfortunately in the current world of fast technology and extreme deadlines, there can be a tendency to ignore or even de-prioritize the business intelligence aspect of an organization’s general fabric. This is really about knowing your market, who and what you are up against as well as the ramifications of some of the decisions you make or choose not to make.

Admittedly it is a tedious process of research and may require a dedicated in-house or external provider to look at the data. There also needs to be a mechanism for storing and sharing the information that has been obtained. However economies of scale and the resultant structural efficiencies will normally offset some of the bureaucratic baggage that comes with some of these high end concepts.

For the prudent manager, technology will play an invaluable role in increasing the speed with which the relevant information can be gathered as well as the accuracy and relevancy of that information. Technology can also be used to disseminate the information and lessons learned in a bespoke way to each unit depending on their own specific requirements. Furthermore the idea of using technological tools will be particularly effective if, as is the case in most instances, the budgets for the business intelligence team are derived from strategic rather than project specific funds.

In conclusion for those organizations that intend to make business intelligence a reality for their day to day activities, it will be important to sell the concept to the key stakeholders such as decisions makers and end users. Resistance will be limited if the people on the frontline can see the results and positive impacts of some of the decisions based on business intelligence. In fact the failure to gain awareness about the issues raised may lead the business to close down due to bad results. I would go as far as arguing that the understanding and use of business intelligence is an essential aspect of a modern business.

As the name suggests predictive, analysis involves the ability to make assumptions about future behavior and outcomes. Given the limits of human experience, good predictions have to come from good data. The requisite data is derived as a consequence of effective business intelligence. Therefore predictive analysis is a consequence of business intelligence. In this article I will attempt to describe the various elements that come into play when trying to make predictions.

The ability to make accurate and defendable predictions will depend also on the ability to use mathematical computations methods such as data mining in order to collate relevant transactional and situational information. This is collectively known as business intelligence. Without the essential elements of information gathering, information processing and finally transferring that information to the decision makes, predictive analysis will not be effective.

There are some industries which virtually rely on predictive analysis to carry out their business. This normally occurs where risk is a fundamental aspect of the products that they sell. Examples include the insurance industry and credit facilities. In any given market segment, there will be quite a high number of potential applicants and business opportunities. Such businesses will need to make fairly accurate decisions about their potential customer if they are not to suffer significant loss.

A case in point is the application for car insurance where the insurer will use business intelligence to work out which particular customers are less likely to overburden the insurance company based on behavior patterns within their characteristic group as well as their own past conduct. If the insurance company gets it wrong, they will be exposed to high risk or even face law suits for discrimination. In this case business intelligence is being used to make day to business decisions even outside the strategic lines of management.

Generally speaking, the type of business intelligence that organization use will fall into the 3 main categories.

The 1st category includes the ones that predict customer behavior based on existing data about them and their peer groups.

The 2nd category includes the ones that describe customer behavior and preferences.

The 3rd category involves making a final decision about the customer based on both the predictive and descriptive elements of the model.

These classifications are just summaries of what can be an exhaustive analysis of data from a very wide spectrum of information both from within the firm and from industry resource centers. The companies that can consistently balance out these three elements will make good decisions most of the time and will consequently improve their bottom line. Once can then see that if senior executives neglect to streamline the quality of their business intelligence, they will be outperformed by more diligent competitors.

In conclusion it is evidently clear that many businesses rely on the ability to predict the behavior of both their customers and their computers. In order to make accurate predictions, they need to access accurate raw data and process it into meaningful messages for the decision makers. Market intelligence enables the organization to streamline data patterns and disseminate them in a useful format.

It is only logical to expect that business intelligence (BI) will be available to the key decisions makers given the fact that its primary purpose is to allow them to make effective and informed decisions. One of the key tools to achieve this goal is the dashboard. At its best, it enables employees from quite varying locations to access, interpret and even share business intelligence. The dashboard also saves them from the hassle of actually going to the data sources in order to negotiate the details. This article highlights the basic features of the business intelligence dashboard and how they can be used to improve the quality and appropriateness of business intelligence.

Essentially the dashboard has many of the characteristics of any given executive information system in as much as it gathers data from various sources and presents them in one place for the database interrogator. Some dashboards are so effective that to the uninitiated it could appear that the data was extracted from one source. A case in point where market trends from online analytic are combined with in house product sales information to create a marketing mix that flashes up on the dashboard. This is the essence of market intelligence in as much as it involves the collation of disparate data which is converted into highly sophisticated management information.

Although most companies would prefer to design their own bespoke modules, the market leaders by volume and coverage really fall into three categories: stand alone software packages, web browser systems and desktop widgets. However anyone of these can be adjusted to meet the specific requirements of the various business intelligence requirements of the company. The adjustments don’t just have to be at the design stage but rather the variants can be aligned on an adhoc basis depending on business period requirements. Other organizations will also create branded in-house versions which broadly fall within one or more of the categories mentioned above.

A key feature of dashboards is that they reap the benefits of interdepartmental working for the executive without having to access individual metrics. It is also possible to create relational patterns and scenario frameworks to enable the decision maker to take a predictive approach to business intelligence. Inevitably the stumbling block will always be data quality and relevance. This is particularly important when the dashboard system comes ready made and no significant adjustments have been allowed to enable the localization of output. Seemingly simple issues such as the difference between four weekly reporting cycles and the calendar month have been known to take months to resolve leading to the loss of vital business intelligence.

The fact that the information is collated about various departments means that the dashboard reduces the costs of multiple reports and also enables comparative analysis as well as highlighting examples of good practices which the executive can introduce to less effective sectors. In short the dashboard is a collegiate business intelligence tool that enables the core functionality of evidence-based decision making to be undertaken within the organization. For many large businesses this has been truly transformative technology.

There is a notoriously hackneyed saying that if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Leaving aside the obvious snigger from those who have heard it all before, it is quite true that good planning is the key to running a viable business. In order to plan the entrepreneur will need information and that is why business intelligence will underpin and ultimately determine the success of corporate planning.

This is more so the case when that planning has to integrate strategic objectives with operational objectives as well as paid due attention financial frameworks. In this article the practical ramifications of business intelligence are shown to impact greatly on the final plans of an organization.

A well thought-out integrated business plan will need to account for the true impact of business decisions as well as making predictions about future outcomes based on the availability of reasonably accurate information. The idea of integration will necessary mean that the various drivers of business growth will have to be individually quantified and then joined together to form a business story which in turn becomes the business plan. Good business intelligence will make this process relatively fast, consistent and effective. Some might go further and argue that without business intelligence, business planning is virtually meaningless.

The technological advancements in business intelligence systems have enabled business planners to construct complex mathematical scenario and quantify previously unquantifiable variants. This has led to an almost symbiotic relationship whereby the development of one element ultimately leads to the re-development of another equivalent element. It therefore goes without saying that the better the business intelligence, the better the planning outcomes.

Integrated business planning also presents some further challenges for business intelligence. For example the modules will need to cater for speculative questions, simulation of probable scenarios, and the demand to bespoke ratio quotients, sensitivity capabilities, infeasibility models and the complex issues of opportunity costs. This means that the business intelligence system has to constantly evolve in reflection of the complexity of modern planning systems. In some of these areas human participation is mandatory if any meaningful results are to be achieved.

Notwithstanding these challenges, business intelligence has continued to provide a useful conduit for the ambitions of business planners throughout the business world. In particular it has been the underlying business information system in terms of providing forums of interdepartmental working, generating performance management systems, opening up relational analysis and improving the effectiveness of line managers.

Is there a tension between fast business planning and detailed business intelligence ? There could be a tension if key planners do not understand the utmost importance of having accurate data in order to facilitate planning. In any case it can be argued that the process of multi dimensional planning requires similar, if not identical, networks of research to deliver results. Without the ability to gather information from some of the remotest sectors of the business, any planning has only superficial meaning and will not go to the root issues that are affecting the company. This is as true for the for-profit sector as it is for the non-profit organization.

Internet has wide scope to start a business either a small level or at a medium level. Example would be expanding into B2B market by sourcing and providing clothes to worldwide users.

After certain period of time, you definitely wish to know the performance of your business and you require certain business intelligence tools which tell you about your performance in gift basket business.
There are many software packages available on Internet for small business and these packages, there are perfect in-built business intelligence tools that generate reports, graphs and analytic reports which state that you are making good profits in your gift basket business.

This indicates that you have improved sales by double growth, which is a very good development. Therefore, Excel displays and demonstrates compatibility and guarantees good service as an effective business intelligence tool for small business.

Business Intelligence tools enable fast and quick service and in fact, these are the main sources of developing a business on Internet. Some of the important tools of BI are data mining tool, OLAP and data warehousing.

Due to the fact that these are technical terms and each Business Intelligence tool has a particular application and implementation method. Unless one is thorough in using a particular business intelligence tool methodically and systematically, one may not be in a position to derive good results from business.

For example, Microsoft Excel sheet is a powerful business intelligence tool which will store large amount of data in figures which may include sales, purchases, profits, expenses, revenues or any graphic representation of a particular business performance.

The moment you go through your Excel sheet, you will realize that performance of your business is very good if profits are indicated. Similarly, reporting tool is another top business intelligence tool which will provide a complete view about your business.

There are already custom-made reports, within the tool which enable easy generation of report system which will give a clear picture and view about your business. This will help you to make improvements and further developments in business. OLAP tool is another advanced tool which makes it easy for the business people to take a close look at the data and make an assessment about their business. Since OLAP tool being a multi dimensional tool, it gives a complete analysis about your business with an over view of requirements for improvements.

Data mining tool is another effective business intelligence tool which finds out the correlation and makes a comparison with different factors. These are all very effective and produce excellent business performance results wherever it is required. Otherwise also, wherever improvements have to be made, that is also indicated.

Business Intelligence helps a company in getting access to huge amount of data so that it can have an idea of its market and stay ahead of its competitors. When Business Intelligence is applied for procurement, it provides better opportunities to the company to present savings prospects by analyzing its procurement related data. Today’s economical times may be challenging but this will prove to be the perfect time to access the crucial data to know your business, your competitors, suppliers and customers are responding to it.

Procurement decisions greatly affect an entire business and that is why, each and every dollar saved through procurement is important to the total earnings of a company. Implementation of Business Intelligence solutions helps in MAKING better procurement decisions as everything involved in the process of procurement helps in bringing out lots of changes in several business matters. These may also include the frequency and quantity of the orders and their inventory levels and delivery as well. Procurement strategies spell out the differences regarding competition in the market and also cost savings.

Selections and decisions made in the process of procurement tremendously affect the entire business, especially the sales, mainly if the products or services are found to have some defects or shortcomings in them. Cheaper costs not necessarily result in good procurement, but it should also involve good quality.

If you give more consideration to the good quality of your products or services, then the defects or shortcomings in them will be automatically reduced. As a result of this, you will be able to maintain good relationship with your suppliers and they will immediately respond to your concerns, queries and issues.

Finding goods is a very significant aspect of any business, and the more important is to find the best ones, and that too at best price possible. A business also needs to find best arrangements of supply and delivery of their goods at reasonable costs. This entire process is a painstaking one, but with IT solutions, this has become much easier and faster than before.

The transactions now are made cheaper and swifter. Because inventory is updated faster now, unnecessary expenses have cut down significantly, which usually gave out slower turn overs. As a result of this, businesses receive quicker responses to the changes made in the market trends and they get more time for performing other important tasks besides transaction processing. When Business Intelligence is employed for procurement, it helps in determining opportunity for the cost savings, it improves the performance of the business through analyzing the current practices, it maintains delivery on time and maintains lower costs than others.

Business Intelligence tools are application software programs designed for reporting, analyzing and presenting data. These tools are helpful in reading data already stored in data mart or data warehouse, and with this information, a business can reach new heights of success in today’s competitive marketplace.

One of the most important and most common Business Intelligence tools is the Microsoft Excel. This is mainly because this program is relatively cheap and is easily accessible. It is commonly used and is available on almost any computer system. An Excel sheet can be sent easily and quickly to a person and you do not need to worry whether the person will be able to read the numbers or not. Microsoft Excel has most of the functionality that a user may need for displaying and reading data.

Because of such a huge popularity of Microsoft Excel program, almost all the third party reporting and OLAP tools have a function to ‘export to Excel’. With all these features, Microsoft Excel seems to be the best program for reporting business operations and tracking goals.

Another important Business Intelligence tool is a reporting tool which can be both commercial and custom built. It provides flexibility to the users to create, run and schedule their reports as per their individual choices and preferences. OLAP tools are also commonly used by the advanced users who want to look at their data from several multiple dimensions, and utilizing these data in strategic business planning.

Data mining tools are also important Business Intelligence tools, but they are used only by a handful of people, even in large organizations. These tools are basically used to find a co-relation between different factors of a business and its competition, and that is why, it remains an important tool to be used for Business Intelligence.

As a conclusion, you will find that these Business Intelligence tools are a great investment for your business as they will provide you an aid that you will not be able to ignore. By using the right set of tools for your organization, you will not only improve the overall performance of your business but you will also be able to keep your clients happy and satisfied.

With the right set of Business Intelligence tools and implementing them in the right areas of your business, you will be able to receive healthy returns on business investment within no time. All in all, the information that users get through these tools will help business enterprise in staying ahead of the competition, and thus, contribute a vital role of business performance and growth.

Analytic practices, applications and technologies used in determining the actual past and future circumstances of the market are jointly known as Business Intelligence or an organization. The use of Business Intelligence, whether it is a small or a large organization, is quite crucial, especially in highly competitive situations in digital age economy.

The BI of a company should be sought, maintained and acquired heavily so that the company can remain aware of the challenges and changes in the market, so that it can offer satisfactory results to its customers. When it is applied within the organization, it ensures effective management and performance of the workers, and that is why, BI is said to be very crucial to a company’s advantage especially moving into digital age economic .

A spreadsheet of the revenues, expenditures and top level employees of your competitors is a very basic example of Business Intelligence. Apart from the spreadsheet, a BI can also be :-

Software which queries and reports like a database software, an online analytical processing like that provided by Microsoft, Freereporting.com, RapidMiner, OpenI and Oracle

Digital dashboards, a presentation that allows you to monitor several parts of a company

Data mining which means extracting patterns from the banks of data

Process mining which means analyzing processes as per the event logs

Business Performance Management that helps in optimization of business performance

LIS or Local Information Systems which help in geographic reporting

In today’s age of economic, there is huge competition in the market and you need to have full knowledge of your competitors to stay ahead of them. Business Intelligence helps a company in knowing its potential clients, clients and also competitors. This information may be used in different aspects of the business from design, conceptualization, technological improvements, manufacturing and innovation to advertising, marketing and public relations.

When you know what your competitors are planning to do next, you can take the necessary steps beforehand in order to overtake the growth of that competitor. In order to implement Business Intelligence in a company, you have to assess the needs first of all and then the financial constraints that may come in the way of acquiring such knowledge.

While implementing Business Intelligence in your company, it should be included in the growing business of present and the future but the company should become a doll at the hands of this competitive knowledge and analytic.

Collection and analysis of data by the businesses was not possible until the onset of 20th century. In the year 1970, introduction of decision support systems took place which was able to analyze only a single department at a time. In the year 1980, introduction of executive information systems took place which could efficiently summarize the ongoing transaction within a business.

By the year 1990, computer technologies were introduced which led to an improvement in the Business Intelligence. Customer relationship management also went through an improvement and advanced techniques of management, along with new technology, improved the reporting, analysis and planning in businesses. These latest development led to an integrated methodology termed as Business Performance Management. Basically, it is a holistic approach towards strategic planning.

Gartner research introduced the entire concept of Business Performance Management in the year 2001, which is also known as Corporate Performance Management at times. Business Performance Management describes the methodologies, systems, processes and metrics required for the management of performance in an organization. Some of the major characteristics of Business Performance Management are complete integration, support of collaboration, automated processing of data, focus on exceptions and analytical insight.

Before the Information Age of 20th century, companies had to collect data from several non-automated resources, which was quite troublesome and time consuming. In the lack of computing resource for analyzing the data properly, most of the commercial decisions were made on the basis of pure intuition. As companies started automating their systems, an increased number of data started becoming available. However, it was difficult to collect data because of shortage of infrastructure meant for data exchange or because of incompatibilities between the systems. Generation of data even took months, leading to long term strategic planning and decision making. However, short term decisions yet needed to be taken on intuition.

Because of increasing standards, technologies and automated systems, vast amounts of data started becoming available. Improved Enterprise Application Integration tools also increased the speed to collecting data. Business Intelligence became an art to sieve through huge amounts of data, taking out useful data from it and turning that data into knowledge on which needed action could be taken.

Business Performance Management or Corporate Performance Management or Enterprise Performance Management have same meanings, which means that they are synonyms. All of them have proved to be extremely helpful in improving the business performance of an enterprise, including its management, employees, workers, customers and clients.

In order to keep this information under track, it will need to use several software programs like Access, Excel and other database applications for different departments of their organization.

Using several software programs is quite difficult, especially if you need to retrieve some information immediately. In the aspect of growing needs for corporate to go boundaryless in today worldwide interaction, web based conferencing technology or teleconferencing facilities has been deployed to enhance smoothness in information exchange.

The term Business Intelligence represents the systems and tools that play a major role in strategic planning processes of a company. With all these aspects of Business Intelligence, it increases the prospects of a company’s success manifolds.

Companies are now becoming more dependent on timely and accurate information so that they can survive in today’s competitive market. Business intelligence solutions and real time data charts are highly effective in getting the right kind of information at the perfect time. If you are also planning to implement Business Intelligence in your organization, then you will need to analyze your requirements so that you can choose the one that is best suitable for your company.

Implementing Business Intelligence solutions to your company is much more than implementing technologies and tools associated with solution. You will need to make sure that the system provides required results and at the same time it is able to refresh real time data marts.

You will also need to access how fast you need the real time information. For example, a bank may need responses within milliseconds while other settings may accept them in a few minutes. The time for the updating of the data needs to be analyzed and based on that, you can choose a near real time solution for your business.

All the users in your organization should be educated about the capabilities of the system. Before implementing Business Intelligence to your organization, you will need real-time integration tools that come with real time data replication engine. The cost of this system is quite higher and an alternative to it is database native replicator. Database triggers can also be used in place of real time systems. They are easy to afford and need low maintenance. The changes captured are posted into a separate area of staging from where real time integration engine is able to read it continuously.

If you are planning to implement Business Intelligence to your company, you may also like to have graphic visuals so that you can have an overall view of the desired function. Analytic dashboards have become a necessity now and they can even supplement statistical and numeric information. When you want real time information through your Business Intelligence system, you will also need to receive it at almost any place you are. There are several gadgets available in the market through which exception alerts and dashboard reports are routed directly to your web enabled devices like PDAs.

If you keep all these things in mind while implement Business Intelligence solutions to your business, then all your business needs will be met effectively. You will need to plan and design the system and entrust its application to a qualified and experienced solutions providers. In this way, you will be able to reap out the benefits directly to your business.

All businesses tend to grow on their own, but this growth can be accelerated with the help of good planning and strategies. If you are a new business owner and want to survive for a long term in this competitive world, then your business will need to have a professional sales closure, sound structure of marketing and a unique technique of presentation.

To achieve all this, you will need a well planned long term business growth strategy. So, have you understood the significance of long term business growth strategies?

You must understand that not a single part of a business can be ignored or overlooked. Each and every step in the growth of a business, including its sales and marketing techniques, needs serious consideration. The basis of a successful long term business growth strategy is common sense. It is good to set goals for every fiscal quarter and percentage of growth every year, but they must be reasonable enough to be achieved. It is often seen that businesses set unpractical goals which are hardly attainable. What such businesses achieve at the end of the year is disappointment and failure.

Marketing your business is not only limited to putting forth what you are offering and sitting back with a hope for increase in your sales. To be successful with your sales and marketing techniques, you should try to acquire full knowledge of your target market and your potential customers, along with their age group and regional territory.

Carry out a thorough marketing research and know what your competitors are exactly doing to promote their products or services. Try to know why they are so successful and after doing that, you can either adopt their strategy to be applied into your own business or you can decide upon doing something different and new.

But this should be done if you are too confident about what you are going to do is going to be successful for sure. You can’t take risks with your business, especially if you are a new business owner.
